Cavalier Gallery NYC presents new works by William Nelson, September 7–30, 2023

Just a short walk from Grand Central or Times Square, you can see Jim Rennert’s iconic Everyman figures in business attire at any time of the day or night.  At 1185 Avenue of the Americas (6^th Ave. between W 46th and W 47th Streets), Rennert’s Inner Dialogue—a person conversing with a miniature version of himself whom he holds in his hand—and Timing—a suited figure glancing at his wristwatch—are on public view. A bit farther uptown at 1350 Avenue of the Americas (between W 54^th and W 55^th St.), passersby will encounter Listen, a 12-foot-tall figure with a finger crossing his lips, gesturing for silence. He seems to encourage viewers to take a break from the hustle and bustle of urban life and just listen, to the sounds of the city, to their companions, or to their own thoughts.

Venture over to 1700 Broadway (between W 53^rd and W 54^th St.), and you cannot miss WTF, a larger-than-life bronze sculpture with arms outstretched and head tilted upward, questioning his circumstances, and perhaps beseeching the universe for better fortune. In this sculpture, as with all Rennert’s work, the artist’s gentle humor and profound empathy shine through universal gestures and figures just abstract enough to represent each of us.

Cavalier Galleries is proud to announce that the bill to establish a women's suffrage monument by Jane DeDecker in Washington DC has been approved!

Marking the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, the President signed the bill in December 2020, authorizing a federal monument to the women's suffrage movement to honor the activists who won women the right to vote.

The sculpture, titled Every Word We Utter, features Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Sojourner Truth, Harriot Stanton Blatch, Ida B. Wells, and Alice Paul.

Jane DeDecker has co-founded the Every Word We Utter campaign in order to support the creation of her monument, which will be the first in Washington, DC to honor women's suffrage. In a statement, DeDecker said “It is fitting to close this year — the centennial of women’s suffrage — with this strong declaration for the history and legacy of the women’s suffrage movement. Women deserve this commemoration, and the battles for equality that continue today deserve it, too.”

HIGHLANDS – Guns Blazing, The War of 1812 and the New Jersey Shore, exhibition has opened at the Twin Lights Historical Museum and will remain in place through Nov. 22.

Highlands, NJ  -  A new, multi-gallery exhibit of historic maritime paintings is open to the public at the Twin Lights Museum. “Guns Blazing! The War of 1812 and the New Jersey Shore” features 15 dramatic works in oil by Maarten Platje, whose bold brushwork and attention to detail brings to life a game-changing chapter in American naval history. The exhibit, in Galleries II and III of the museum, also features historic artifacts and a short video on the 32-month conflict between the United States and Great Britain.

he Flatiron Partnership welcomes Hippo Ballerina to the South Plaza! Weighing 2.5 tons, and cast in bronze and clad in a copper tutu, Hippo Ballerina (who we've affectionately dubbed Henrietta) by Danish artist Bjørn Okholm Skaarup will be on display near 22nd Street and Broadway now through Thanksgiving.

In 2014 our friends at Navesink Maritime Heritage Association organized an event that commemorated New Jersey’s 350^th anniversary. Martin & Ottaway and a number of maritime organizations quickly jumped in as event sponsors and their sponsorship allowed the replica vessel Onrust to visit the Navesink River where New Jersey was originally settled.

The newest paintings on exhibit at the Channel Islands Maritime Museum are by a Dutch artist who finds visual inspiration in American maritime history. Painter Maarten Platje's ambitious plan resulted in fifteen paintings depicting important historical events and sea battles. These paintings will be on display at the Channel Islands Maritime Museum January 9 through to March 25, 2019.

From Maine to Miami, seascapes have long tugged on the restlessness of wayfarers’ eyes and artists’ hands. From watercolors depicting palm trees to glossy hyperrealistic vistas, the risks undertaken by those who navigated peril have been rendered romantic by those who navigate composition, chroma, and value. Horizon lines exist for both captains and painters.

Art New York, presented by Art Miami, returns to Pier 94 from May 3-6 offering noteworthy and fresh works by important artists from the contemporary, modern, post-war and pop eras, featuring paintings, photography, prints, drawings, design and sculpture. 

Veteran painter Francine Tint has spent all her life in New York. She has a studio downtown, not far from where she lives on the edge of the West Village. A truly gifted abstract-expressionist artist, Tint was deeply influenced by both the writings and person of Clement Greenberg, who regularly visited her in her studio. Her lyric hand finds expression in wonderfully colorful paintings that incorporate the achievements of the New York School while refusing to succumb to historical reiteration, mawkish emotion, or a grandiose sense of theater.

Art itself is inspired and diverse, it merges and conflates ideas that take the form of creative expression in ways difficult to define. The paintings of Francine Tint are a perfect example of this. At first we may view them as agglomerations of pure pigment, but soon we begin to see portions of her composition stand out from the rest.

Please join us to celebrate the unveiling of Danish artist Bjorn Skaarup's monumental bronze sculpture, Hippo Ballerina. The copper tutu-clad bronze sculpture stands over 15-foot tall and is Skaarup's first US public art installation. Inspired by Degas’ Little Dancer Aged Fourteen and the dancing hippos of Walt Disney’s Fantasia, Hippo Ballerina vividly illustrates Skaarup’s ability to reinterpret subjects and themes found in ancient myths, art history, modern animation, and contemporary popular culture in playful ways that are accessible to visitors at any age! An exhibit of 8 bronze works displayed outside the Cathedral, adjacent to the west front. Inspired by Camille Saint-Saens “Carnival of the Animals”, artist Bjørn Skaarup crafted these pieces to exude a cheerful wit and whimsy that underscore the lighter side of human association with the animal kingdom. The animals represent human allegories based on their physical and spiritual traits, drawing on art history and poetry. The use of animals and especially the sense of whimsy both resonate strongly with existing imagery found both in the Cathedral’s fabric and in the longstanding traditions of cathedral imagery.

Leonard Mizerek, Fellow of the American Society of Marine Artists,  recently sold his original oil painting to the Minnesota Marine Art Museum. "Susan Constant at Dock", painted plein air at the Jamestown Settlement in Virginia, was made part of the permanent collection of the Minnesota Marine Art Museum.

The egg tempera, "Stowaway", by Douglas Wiltraut of Whitehall, Pennsylvania, was awarded First Place in the 80th National Midyear Exhibition of the Butler Institute of American Art located in Youngstown, Ohio.  The awards were selected by John Vanco, Director and Chief Curator of the Erie Art Museum.  "Ginger Snaps" another egg tempera by Wiltraut, was awarded the Katharine Steele Renninger Memorial Award at the 62nd Annual of the National Society of Painters in Casein & Acrylic at the Salmagundi Club in New York City.  The award was selected by Everett Raymond Kinstler, N.A., AWS.

On November 9, Notables gathered at the Cavalier Art Gallery New York for a members-only artist reception. The evening celebrated Bjørn Okholm Skaarup: Carnival of the Animals, the artist’s first solo American museum exhibition on display at the Bruce Museum. The evening was capped by a trio of Ensemble ACJW musicians who performed a tribute to the animal-themed art in the gallery, with special arrangements created for this event.  This event was made possible by the generosity of Notables Committee member Matthew Holtzman, Patrick Monahan, and the Cavalier Gallery New York.

A documentary on famed celebrity photographer Harry Benson called “Shoot First” is being re-edited after making its world premiere at the Hamptons International Film Festival this month.

Sources said the film, by Matthew Miele, who previously directed “Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf’s,” is adding more details to stories behind some of the great photos featured in it.

Cavalier Gallery is pleased to announce the one year installation anniversary of the monumental bronze sculpture by Salt Lake City artist Jim Rennert titled THINK BIG in New York City. In the winter of 2013 THINK BIG first landed on 57th Street and 5th Avenue, facing some opposition from the city.  After several months of temporary placements thanks to supporters of Rennert and the sculpture, the New York Parks Department joined us in supporting this inspirational work and it has been on view in Union Square Park since June, 2014. 

To celebrate THINK BIG officially joining the ranks of the iconic monuments of New York City, Jim Rennert will be visiting New York and bringing his life-size rendition of THINK BIG on an interactive tour of some of the most celebrated landmarks of New York on Thursday, December 18.
