Elizabeth Weiss

BIOGRAPHY

Elizabeth Weiss Biography

American

As she embraces the principles of Classical Realism in oil painting, Elizabeth is devoted to merging subtle effects of light and color with subjects which often possess an inherent sense of fragility yet endurance. Conveying the timeless beauty of these delicate subjects reminds her that this world is both enduring and ephemeral. She has become increasingly compelled to infuse her work with a deeper emotional quality- with the sense that even during our times of greatest suffering, we possess within us the potential power to transform that pain into something truly and uniquely beautiful. Her collective body of work is lovingly dedicated to her late half-brother, Jonathan.

Elizabeth is currently a member of the International Guild of Realism. She intensively studied drawing, painting, sculpture and art history at the New York Studio School as well as Indiana University, where she received the highest honors for excellence in painting upon her graduation. Her artwork has been included in numerous exhibitions at some of the finest galleries throughout the United States.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT:
“Although – or perhaps because – I’ve spent my entire life living among concrete and skyscrapers, nature’s shapes and colors inspire me most.

I came to mixed media collage as a result of my love of working with a variety of materials and mediums coupled with a very short attention span. One material was never enough! I needed to mix the paper with the wood, the clay with the glass, and the ink with the fabric – and then I needed to mix it all together.

I grew up in a family of engineers and designers. We were always pulling things apart to see how they were made, or hacking something together out of seemingly unrelated parts to fill a need or specific function. Discovery and invention are a large and exciting part of my work process. I am always searching for new things to add to my artistic cache of materials and tools.

For me, it is the process, the artistic journey that is most important. A piece starts with an idea or photograph, followed by time spent experimenting with my materials to push them into a non-traditional form to be used in new ways. I seek to develop new methods and techniques, and then combine them into a final composition.

My intention as an artist is to create something engaging that also invites the viewer to step closer, to see and enjoy the individual elements that make up the whole.”
