What the hand refuses to forget: Bruno Lucchesi and the necessity of sculpture

Bruno Lucchesi understood that making a human being from clay is an act bordering on trespass. The sculptor presses a thumb where an eye will open, draws a mouth from wet earth and decides how much sorrow a shoulder can carry. Limbs emerge, collapse and are summoned again. Material gathers beneath the fingernails; anatomy becomes instinct. Nothing about the process is distant or entirely civilized. Rather, it is tactile, guttural and perilously close to creation itself.

Lucchesi's Work Lives on in Major Museums, Public and Private Collections Worldwide

NEW YORK, NY — The art world mourns the passing of Italian-American sculptor Bruno Lucchesi, who died in New York at the age of 99, just weeks before his 100th birthday.

For more than seven decades, Lucchesi created figurative sculptures in bronze, terracotta, and marble inspired by everyday life. His work explored themes of family, compassion, spirituality and the human experience.

November 5, 2024, Greenwich, CT—Cavalier Ebanks Galleries is pleased to announce a special celebration in honor of our thirtieth year on Greenwich Avenue. Established in 1986 in downtown Stamford, Connecticut, Ronald Cavalier, Jr. moved his main gallery to neighboring Greenwich in 1994 where it has become a mainstay on the Avenue. With additional galleries in Nantucket, New York City, and Palm Beach, Cavalier Galleries remains proud to call Connecticut home.

Join us at 175 Greenwich Avenue on Saturday, November 9, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm for refreshments, tours of our three-floor exhibition space, and a first look at the 30th Anniversary Greenwich Exhibition, which features new works by gallery artists. The gallery is open from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm and visitors will receive a copy of our annual print catalogue.
