Cavalier Galleries is proud to present Winfred Rembert: All Me, opening March 7th at Cavalier Gallery in New York. The show will run from March 7- April 7 and an opening reception will be held Thursday, March 7 from 6-8pm at Cavalier Gallery, Ground floor, 3 West 57th Street, NYC.

Winfred Rembert’s astonishing work offers a window into the life of an African-American man growing up in the pre-civil rights, segregated South. Rembert works in dyed, tooled, and carved leather, creating pieces that are piercingly authentic. He shows scenes from his experiences toiling in cotton fields, years spent on a prison chain gang, and the survival of a near lynching, as well as images of family, tight knit community, and iconic characters from the town where he grew up. Rembert’s pictures are brightly colored and boldly patterned, creating simultaneously breathtaking pieces of art and powerful records of history.

These energetic compositions have brought Rembert comparisons to noted African-American artists Hale Woodruff, Jacob Lawrence, Horace Pippin, and Romare Bearden. Rembert, who is self-taught, lives and works in New Haven, Connecticut. His paintings are represented in several important public and private collections and were the subject of a major exhibition at the Yale University Art Gallery in 2000.

We are honored to present this body of work, including 30 of Rembert’s carved and tooled leather pieces. These pieces exemplify Rembert’s mastery in using specific powerful motifs to create both pattern and narrative- for example, as in GSP: Cotton Picking and Memories of the Field, white dots representing cotton stand out boldly from the work. In Cracking Rocks and Chain Gang, by depicting repeating figures dressed in striped prison uniforms Rembert creates a dynamic pattern and a striking scene.
