Stone Roberts

BIOGRAPHY

Stone Roberts Biography

American, b. 1951

A painter in the style of the Old Masters, Stone Roberts creates figure, genre, and interior paintings of large-scale depictions of modern-day persons in settings with antiquities. The impression is of reality and incongruity, meaning the style of painting is realistic but the setting is improbable.

Roberts was born and raised in Asheville, North Carolina. He studied at Yale University and the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia. As an undergraduate, he studied with realist painter William Bailey, and during a year's graduate fellowship in Rome, he studied with Ronald Markman. At age 33, Roberts completed his first major work, "Janet," a figurative work that referenced Vermeer in treatment of light and composition.
