PRESS RELEASE

PRESS RELEASE: Icons of Photography [Nantucket, MA], Sep 26 - Oct 13, 2014

Cavalier Galleries is excited to announce Icons of Photography, a special exhibition featuring the works of some of the world’s most renowned photographers. The show will run from September 26th to October 13th in our Nantucket gallery.

Icons of Photography brings together the past and the present with a collection of some of the finest photographs of art history with new masterpieces of today. The show includes such established photographers as Steve McCurry, Harry Benson, Ruth Orkin, Morris Engel, Robert Farber, Alex Guofeng Cao, and Stephen Wilkes.

Some highlights of the exhibition include Harry Benson’s legendary portraits, which bring us back to some of the greatest pop culture figures in history – The Beatles, Muhammad Ali, and Andy Warhol.

Steve McCurry has created easily one of the most recognizable images of the last few decades – the “Afghan Girl” – which first appeared on the cover of National Geographic magazine. When McCurry photographed the young girl, she first covered her face with her hands, creating a more mysterious and subdued image than the one that rose to iconic status, which will also be exhibited.

Icons of Photography also includes works by Ruth Orkin, photographer of the notorious “American Girl in Italy.” This image of a young woman walking the streets of Florence passing by several Italian admirers is still extremely well-known today for its beauty and humor.

This comprehensive exhibition also celebrates contemporary artists, including photographer Robert Farber. Farber is known for his early fashion photography, nudes and seascapes shot in his signature romantic style.
