Francine Tint

BIOGRAPHY

Francine Tint Biography

American, b. 1953

As a child, Francine Tint dreamed of moving to New York to become an artist. She began her career in the city in fashion, working as a stylist. For 17 years Francine supported her artistic dreams by styling by day and painting by night. She says of that time, “It was rough, but it worked. It worked well.” Inspiration was drawn from her time amongst the assorted styles and fashions of clothes. Francine says she, like many masters of old who studied costume, was inspired by the different folds and textures of fabric and the possibilities therein. As a female artist making her way in the time of a mostly male body of Abstract Expressionists, Francine was a stand out in breaking into the “boys club” (as she calls it). She developed a friendship with fellow artist Larry Poons, the two would help an inspire each other in years to come.

Francine developed her signature style as a result of painting in a small space. She prefers to create large scale works, and so would stretch canvas across the walls and ceiling of her studio, resulting in the drips in her pieces that have become a signature component of her work. Francine leads a very disciplined lifestyle, she rises each morning to exercise and then paints all day. Francine cites painting as her outlet to letting loose, freeing herself from the discipline she brings into all other aspects of her life.

Francine Tint is a New York based abstract expressionist painter. She studied painting at Pratt Institute as well as the Brooklyn Museum College. Tint’s work has been exhibited in over thirty solo shows in the United States and Europe, and is in the permanent collections of numerous museums including the Clement Greenberg collection at the Portland Art Museum and the Krannert Art Museum in Chicago. Her work is in private and corporate collections including Pepsi Co. and Mount Sinai Hospital.
